The Alter Ego Effect

Had about 9 hours in the car alone for a roadtrip to New Mexico and listened to most of the audiobook of The Alter Ego Effect: The Power of Secret Identities to Transform Your Life by performance coach Todd Herman.

Gotta say … it’s excellent.

The Alter Ego Effect, to me, is a shortcut and framework for getting into a peak performance mindset.

I’ve already begun thinking of my alter ego(s) for several key situation where I want to raise my game and need to show up better.

One of the examples of using an alter ego he uses in the book is football star Bo Jackson.

He quotes Bo saying: “Bo Jackson never played a down of football in his life.”

Instead when he stepped onto the football field he channeled another identity: Jason from Friday the 13th movies.

Herman calls this transformation of leveraging the alter ego your “phone booth moment.”

The chapter on totems is really interesting too … using some kind of artifact, maybe a piece of jewelry like Wonder Woman’s bracelets, to help you step into your alter ego.
