I read a lot of books … but rarely does one consume and focus me like Willpower Doesn’t Work: Discover the Hidden Keys to Success by Benjamin Hardy.
I’ve been a fan of his work and subscriber to his email newsletter for a while now, but this book is hitting all the themes in my life right now.
The central thesis is: Your environment shapes you.
It’s ultimately what makes you a success, not your willpower. And he goes even farther saying:
“To be frank, willpower is for people who haven’t decided what they want in their lives.”
He’s got a compelling argument for all of it. And it’s floored me.
For so long I’ve relied solely on my inner resources when I can clearly see now how much of my environment (the one I consciously or subconsciously created) has shaped me and my success or lack thereof.
I’m currently trying to implement the suggestions for creating the right environment around me to help me achieve my next stage goals.
